Dan Thompson
Dan offers more than thirty years of experience between public accounting and the California Board of Equalization. He has served as a Partner and Principal, focusing on both state and local tax issues at two Big 4 accounting firms. Dan founded Thompson Tax in June 2002. His consulting clients include both national and international companies representing broadly diverse markets.
Dan graduated from California State University, Long Beach with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. A frequent public speaker, he lectures on taxation for many respected tax educators including the California Society of CPAs, Tax Executives Institute (TEI), Georgetown University Law Center and various business groups.
Dan is a member of the American Institute of CPAs, the California Society of CPAs, and the Institute for Professionals in Taxation (IPT). Dan has served as chairman of the California Society of CPAs Sales and Use Tax Symposium and instructor of Golden Gate University's State and Local Tax Program.

John Hayashi has a unique combination of Big 4 public accounting and private industry experience, giving him an ideal complement of consulting skills to offer his clients. As a former Director and Practice Leader for PricewaterhouseCoopers' State Tax Consulting group's San Francisco office, John coordinated PwC's numerous multi-state tax resources with an emphasis in their multi-state sales and use tax practice. John's sales and use tax consulting projects covered a wide range of businesses across a diverse mix of industries.
Prior to joining PwC, John was a Vice President and Senior Tax Counsel at Wells Fargo Bank for seven and one-half years. During his time at Wells Fargo, John addressed the numerous state and local tax issues faced by the Bank and its subsidiaries. John was a member of the California Bankers Association's Tax Committee where he actively participated in the Committee's analysis of the Multi-state Tax Commission's ("MTC") Apportionment and Sourcing regulations that formed the basis for California's financial institution apportionment regulations adopted in 1996. John also subsequently participated in the analysis of the MTC regulations conducted in states surrounding California, to establish a uniform set of apportionment and sourcing law for financial institutions in the western United States.
John earned his B.S. in Business Management/Managerial Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received his Juris Doctor degree from the Georgetown University Law Center. John is a member of the Missouri Bar and was a licensed CPA in Missouri.

Bill brings more than 20 years of experience between public accounting and the California Board of Equalization. He was formerly a Partner at two Big 4 accounting firms, focusing on sales and use tax issues.
Bill has extensive multi-state audit defense and consulting experience for numerous clients located throughout the country. Additionally, Bill has managed numerous sales and use tax refund analysis projects for large clients in wide range of industries including high technology and healthcare . Bill has also focused on the streamlining and automation of organizations' sales and use tax processes.
Bill has been a speaker on sales and use tax topics for associations including the Tax Executives Institute, Institute for Professionals in Taxation and National Business Institute. Bill graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting.
Bill is a member of the American Institute of CPAs, the California Society of CPAs, and the Institute for Professionals in Taxation (IPT).

With more than twenty-eight years experience at the California State Board of Equalization, Steve's expertise covers all sales, use and excise tax issues. Serving as a Senior Tax Auditor at the Board's San Francisco office, Steve's responsibilities included large sales and use tax audits of industrial businesses, financial institutions, software developers and public utility companies. In addition, he performed audits of public and private universities and non-profit organizations.
Steve worked to develop and strengthen the Board's audit programs by analyzing tax and legal issues raised in audits and reviewing those findings with key tax and legal representatives.
Steve served ten years as the San Francisco District Training Coordinator and was responsible for planning and supervising the Board's annual training program for more than 100 auditors in the district.
Steve received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration-Accounting from San Francisco State University.

Nicole Brown
Nicole has versatile sales and use tax experience in multijurisdictional transaction tax compliance, research, taxability studies and voluntary disclosure agreements. She has handled detailed studies to determine taxability of specific products and services. Nicole also administers compliance for clients in hundreds of jurisdictions. Her attention to detail and exemplary spreadsheet analysis have ensured thorough resolution of complex projects.
Prior to joining the firm, Nicole spent six years providing mutual fund and insurance accounting services with State Street in Kansas City, Missouri, where she made a rapid ascent from Fund Accountant to Account Manager. She managed several client accounts, providing accuracy and strong client relations. Nicole continues to utilize her finance background to understand and assist clients with their tax issues.
Nicole earned her Bachelor of Science from the University of Kansas in Accounting and Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance. Nicole is associated with the Counsel On State Taxation (COST) and the Institute of Professionals in Taxation.

With more than twelve years of service as a senior tax auditor for the California State Board of Equalization and over five years of experience as a tax manager with a Big 4 accounting firm, Roy specializes in multistate sales and use tax matters across a broad spectrum of industries.
Roy's extensive experience in both government and public accounting provides invaluable insight and unparalleled benefits to his many clients who entrust him with their sales and use tax issues. Roy's areas of expertise include audit defense, voluntary disclosures, managed audits, due diligence and transactional analysis. Roy also assists his clients in minimizing audit assessments while obtaining timely refunds by reviewing their business operations for overpayments.
Roy graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration - Accounting from San Jose State University and is a certified member (CMI) of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation (IPT) for sales tax.
In his spare time, Roy enjoys traveling with his wife and daughter, golf and cheering for the San Francisco Giants.

Rob Newlin has over eighteen years of indirect tax experience of which the last twelve have been spent in the improvement, automation, and optimization of clients' global indirect tax processes and systems to provide efficiency and savings associated with business transformations and ERP implementations. He has performed and managed detailed tax process and systems reviews, as well as, implementations of global indirect tax solutions using: native ERP functionality, Sabrix, Taxware, and Vertex in a variety of billing, procurement, and financial applications including: Oracle Financials (10.7 through R12), SAP (R/3 and ECC), JD Edwards OneWorld, legacy systems, and custom web-based online transaction processing systems.
Rob started his career as a California sales and use tax auditor where he verified the proper amounts of sales and use taxes due from taxpayers, educated taxpayers about improved tax compliance, taught basic sales and use tax concepts, and organized multi-agency tax seminars. He has leveraged this experience to provide multi-state tax research, planning, compliance, audit defense, refund analysis, and voluntary disclosure services to clients in a wide range of industries.
Rob's unique blend of core sales and use tax, global indirect tax, process, and technology experience allows him to provide clients with the necessary tax business,and systems perspectives when delivering effective and scalable tax solutions.

As a former Executive Director of the California State Board of Equalization, Jim's comprehensive experience includes audits in the manufacturing, hospitality, publishing, airline, motion picture, leasing, and entertainment industries.
Jim served for over thirty-two years at the Board where he also held positions as the Board's San Francisco District Principal Auditor, the San Francisco District Administrator, the Chief of Field Operations, the Deputy Director for the Property Taxes Department and the Deputy Director for the Sales and Use Tax Department. In addition, Jim worked as a trainer and speaker, providing education and a unique upper management perspective of the Board's operations and processes.
Jim offers unparalleled expertise and depth of knowledge on policies and procedures within the Board of Equalization as well as maintaining excellent relationships with Board members and staff.
Jim earned a degree in Accounting from San Francisco State College.

Adam specializes in sales and use tax compliance and reverse audits in multistate jurisdictions. His experience includes research and review of compliance and audits, and includes the preparation of taxability matrices for multiple projects.
Adam works on tax analysis for reverse audit refund claims in a multitude of states. Through his previous customer service management experience, he has been able to add value to the preparation and review of multistate sales and use tax returns.
Adam graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and a minor in Sociology from Northern Illinois University. Adam is a member of the Institute of Professionals in Taxation.
