Michael DeAngelis
Michael DeAngelis, JD
Michael has over thirty years of state franchise and income tax experience in both public accounting and industry. He focuses on state and local tax planning, transactional advice and tax controversy matters. Prior to joining Thompson Tax & Associates, LLC, Michael spent ten years as a Director with PricewaterhouseCoopers' State and Local Tax practice and twenty years at Bank of America NT&SA in San Francisco, where he was a Vice President and Senior Tax Counsel.
Michael has specialized expertise handling complex, multistate franchise and income tax matters including nexus, apportionment, unitary business, combined reporting, classification of income, and bank and financial institution issues. He also has extensive experience handling state tax audits and pursuing administrative appeals. Michael has represented clients in administrative controversies before tax agencies in California, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon and Texas. He is the co-author of the administrative procedures chapter in California Tax Analysis, published by CCH.
Michael has spoken on California and multistate tax issues at numerous forums including the California Franchise Tax Board Tax Policy Conference, Council on State Taxation, Tax Executives Institute, National Conference of State Legislatures, Committee on Banking Institutions on Taxation, and American Bar Association Tax Section.
Michael's experience in both industry and public accounting and his longstanding relationships with tax officials in California and other jurisdictions allow him to achieve favorable results for his clients and resolve their tax issues both expeditiously and pragmatically.
Michael earned an A.B. in Philosophy from Boston University, a J.D. from Hastings College of the Law, and an LL.M. in Taxation from Boston University School of Law. He is a member of the California and Pennsylvania Bar Associations and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Tax Court and the U.S. District Court, Northern District of California.
